Using Gauges to Troubleshoot Auto Air Conditioning Systems

Some of the common problems associated with your vehicle’s air conditioning system can be easily diagnosed and repaired. You can even do the diagnosis yourself and save on the service charge you would incur by taking it to a shop. All you need to have is some basic tools and the right information on how to go about troubleshooting. What You Need A manifold gauge is the basic toolset that you need for the work. This comprises of two tubes that are to be connected to your vehicle’s service ports when you are carrying out the troubleshooting. There is also a third tube that connects to the refrigerant cylinder. The three tubes have different colours for easy identification. The blue coloured tube is connected to the low pressure port, the red coloured tube is connected to the high pressure port and the yellow coloured tube is connected to the refrigerant cylinder. This set is completed by a gauge with knobs for controlling the tubes connected to the pressure ports. The gauges have the same colour as the tubes they are supposed to be connected to. Understanding the Gauges The two gauges are numbered differently since they measure different things. The low pressure gauge has markings to measure both pressure and vacuum. The markings on the outer side of the gauge measure the pressure. The markings on the inner side indicate the temperature measurement of the refrigerant. The markings at the bottom of the gauge indicate the vacuum measurements. The high pressure gauge only has markings to measure the pressure. Faulty Compressor If your vehicle’s compressor is faulty, the air conditioning unit may not operate properly at idle speeds. Using the manifold gauge, you can detect this problem when the gauges show low pressure and low vacuum.
