When choosing which differential to use in your vehicle, you need to be aware of your driving habits. If you enjoy driving off road, or if you often find yourself driving on low traction surfaces, you have probably already considered the option of switching the diff in your vehicle to a locking or a limited slip differential. The two are fairly similar in function, but are still suited for different types of driving. Just a quick evaluation of the properties of these two models can help you choose what would suit your driving habits best. Locked differential (or lock diff) A locking differential is suited for the full off road experience. As it allows both wheels on the same axle to rotate at the same speed in nearly all situations, regardless of traction, it can allow the vehicle to move over any type of surface without getting stuck as it gives the same amount of power to both tyres. The lock diff comes in two different executions; one that can be locked manually and one automatically. However, when the vehicle needs to be driven on road, an automatic lock diff can activate without it being necessary and make it difficult to turn the vehicle properly. The manual types might require action from you as a driver, but do not differ from the automatic type when off road. You might not want to choose a locking differential if you’re not frequently driving off road in rough terrain. Driving a vehicle with a locked differential on a regular road might become rather dangerous. Using Gauges to Troubleshoot Auto Air Conditioning Systems

Some of the common problems associated with your vehicle’s air conditioning system can be easily diagnosed and repaired. You can even do the diagnosis yourself and save on the service charge you would incur by taking it to a shop. All you need to have is some basic tools and the right information on how to go about troubleshooting. What You Need A manifold gauge is the basic toolset that you need for the work. This comprises of two tubes that are to be connected to your vehicle’s service ports when you are carrying out the troubleshooting. There is also a third tube that connects to the refrigerant cylinder. The three tubes have different colours for easy identification. The blue coloured tube is connected to the low pressure port, the red coloured tube is connected to the high pressure port and the yellow coloured tube is connected to the refrigerant cylinder. This set is completed by a gauge with knobs for controlling the tubes connected to the pressure ports. The gauges have the same colour as the tubes they are supposed to be connected to. Understanding the Gauges The two gauges are numbered differently since they measure different things. The low pressure gauge has markings to measure both pressure and vacuum. The markings on the outer side of the gauge measure the pressure. The markings on the inner side indicate the temperature measurement of the refrigerant. The markings at the bottom of the gauge indicate the vacuum measurements. The high pressure gauge only has markings to measure the pressure. Faulty Compressor If your vehicle’s compressor is faulty, the air conditioning unit may not operate properly at idle speeds. This means that you have to increase the engine speed for you to get the air conditioning pressures you find satisfactory. Using the manifold gauge, you can detect this problem when the gauges show low pressure and low vacuum. This means that even changing the refrigerant may not help and you might need to replace or repair the compressor. Bad Expansion Valve This is a common culprit in faulty auto air conditioning systems. The gauge in this case will show that the low pressure port has low suction while the high pressure side has normal pressure. This might mean that the valve is clogged. Stop In A Safe Place When you become aware that one of the tires is flat, immediately look for a flat piece of land—one that sits off the main part of the road. Lay-bys are ideal. Don’t completely remove them, just loosen them so they are able to turn freely. If you attempt to do this part while the vehicle is raised off the ground, you could injure yourself; it usually makes the vehicle jerk when you initially loosen the nuts, which can unsettle the jack. Fully Raise The Vehicle When the nuts have been loosened, you can now raise the vehicle so that the wheel is off the ground. Then, continue to remove all the nuts, and take the tire off. Grab the spare wheel and position it onto the threads, and screw the nuts back in so that they are hand tight. Lower The Vehicle Once off the jack, you can use the wrench to fully tighten the nuts. Areas that have been dented can weaken areas next to, and around, the damage; this can eventually compromise the safety of the overall vehicle. While it can be inexpensive to buy kits for panel beating, a more important issue is understanding what process takes place in order to correctly repair the damage. If you have no prior experience of panel beating, here are some of the techniques used to repair dents. Planishing Planishing is the process of flattening out sheet metal using different types of hammers. In many cases, the metal must be heated up first, using an oxyacetylene torch. Once the area has been warmed up, effectively shrinking the metal, hammers and dollies can be used to restore the metal to its previous shape. Fillers In some cases, a filler substance can be used to fill small holes and dents on a vehicle. The filler, known as putty, is thoroughly mixed and then applied to the damaged area. Once it has fully hardened, the filler can then be sanded and painted so that it matches the rest of the vehicle. Sanding There are two methods of sanding down a vehicle: wet and dry sanding. Sanding is used to reshape and smooth off an area of the vehicle. Wet sanding uses water to rinse the area as it is sanded, and will typically give a better end result than dry sanding, which is simply sanding an area without the use of water. Dry sanding can still give a good result, if done properly. Welding Welding, in panel beating, is not used to actually repair the damage; it is used to strengthen an area that has been repaired using the planishing technique. Usually, two pieces of metal are joined together using either arc welding (this technique uses electrodes) or by using an oxyacetylene torch to heat and join the metal.
